5.8Ghz VTX Channel Chart For FrSky Taranis

Introduction

Fat Shark, Boscam, Race Band… They all have channels 1 – 8, but some of these channels either overlap or are very close to each other. If you have ever flown with a group of FPV pilots, chances are you’ve been asked which frequency you are running on your video transmitter (VTX). This is when you start digging through your FPV gear looking for your frequency chart that you don’t have with you; Only to end up pulling out your phone and looking it up online. The channel.lua script is a very basic script that puts a frequency chart on your FrSky Taranis to access at the push of a button.

What You Will Need

  • The Lua Script: channels.lua (right-click and save link)
    • Thanks to Philipp’s comment below I have updated the download link to be the 5 band version
  • OpenTX Companion (See Part 1 for Details)

Instructions

Part 1 – Flashing your Taranis with Lua Enabled Firmware

This part is only for users who do not have the Lua enabled firmware on their Taranis. If you already have Lua enabled firmware you can skip to Part 2. If you do not know what this means, chances are you do not have Lua enabled and will need to follow these steps.

WARNING: These instructions will take you through the steps to upgrade your Taranis firmware with Lua enabled. The standard upgrade process should not overwrite your existing settings or models, but it is always best practice to backup your configuration before performing any firmware updates. I take no responsibility for failed updates or lost data.

  1. Download and install the latest version of OpenTX Companion (Currently 2.1.7)
  2. Run OpenTX Companion
  3. Click the Settings Icon

  4. Give your radio a “Profile Name”

  5. Select your “Radio Type” (Mine is a Taranis Plus,  yours might be different)

  6. In the “Build Options” make sure that “Lua” is selected

  7. Click “OK”
  8. You will now need to plug in your Taranis in BootLoader mode
    1. Plug in your USB cable to your computer but not in to the Taranis yet
    2. Turn off your Taranis if it is on
    3. While holding the lower trim switches inward turn on the power switch

    4. If done properly you should see the text “Taranis BootLoader…” at the top of the screen
    5. Plug in the USB cable to your Taranis
  9. Click the Download Icon

  10. Click “Check for updates”

  11. Click “Download FW”

  12. You can save the firmware anywhere on your computer
  13. You should then be prompted to flash the firmware on your Taranis

  14. Click “Yes”
  15. Click Write to TX

  16. Once the firmware flash is complete you can unplug the USB
  17. Select Exit on the Taranis to restart it
  18. You now have the latest firmware with Lua enabled!

Part 2 – Adding and Configuring the Channel Lua Script

These steps will walk you through the process to add the channel.lua script to your Taranis and configure it as a telemetry screen.

  1. Download the channels.lua script
  2. Connect your Taranis to your computer in BootLoader Mode
    1. Plug in your USB cable to your computer but not in to the Taranis yet
    2. Turn off your Taranis if it is on

    5. Plug in the USB cable to your Taranis

  4. Open the folder labeled “SCRIPTS”. Create the folder if it does not exist.

  5. Open the folder labeled “TELEMETRY”. Create the folder if it does not exist

  9. Once the Taranis reboots in to normal mode click the MENU button
  10. Click the PAGE button until you reach the Telemetry page

  12. Press the ENT button
  13. Press the up ( + ) button until the option reads “Script”

  14. Press the ENT button
  15. Press the down ( – ) button once to highlight the option next to “Script”

  16. Press the ENT button

  18. Press the EXIT button until you reach the main page
  19. Press and hold the PAGE button to get to your telemetry screens. If you set the channels script to page 1 like I did you should now see the channel chart (If not, press the PAGE button until you reach the page you set). Press and hold the EXIT button to get back to the main page.
